On an Apple Macbook can you store all your songs on a wireless hard drive?

I just got my laptop a few months ago and am completely computer illiterate. I have thousands and thousands of songs that I would love to save on my computer but I am afraid if my computer crashes my music will be lost. I have seen wireless hard drives to back up your data but I don't know much about it. Can someone please tell me from your experience what I can do to save music in a separate device. Thanks.
