If your on a T-Mobile G1 can you go on aim leave the aim box (not sign out) and still be notified about IMs?

I wanna no if the G1 does like a sidekick n tells me when I get a new aim without having to stay on the actual aim screen but be on the home screen or sumthing n get notified
