Is frequent elections in American democracy the reason why we don't have coups or dictatorships in our country?

Even if there were longer periods in between terms, the system is set up to sort itself out and refine itself. Ineffective leaders would be consequently impeached, and laws would cause the government to restructure itself to work well for the people - that is, only if the people participate and fulfill their social contract.
